5 years ago today

I remember where I was September 11, 2001.  I was in the car driving to a doctor's appointment.  It was between classes while I was in college.  I remember hearing it on the radio.  By the time I got home all that was on TV was the video of the plane hitting the tower over and over.  I remember the feeling that hung over me for almost two weeks after.  It was impossible to keep going and see things the same way as before September 11, 2001.

Five years later I don't think the state of the world has improved.  No one has 'gotten over' what happened that day and I don't think it should be forgotten.  I don't think we learned much from the experience.  I still see the U.S. behaving in the same way.  That cannot bode well.  We certainly do not need another tragedy of that magnitude ever again.  All I really see in the world is more fear and hatred and those are the two things that could cause another tragedy.

On a lighter note I had a fun and eventful week-end.  On Friday night my friend Ann came into town and we went to Tom Petty together.  He was a fantastic performer and so very humble.  The best part was when he sang Learning to Fly acoustic and the audience sang with him. It gave me chills.  As the encore started the storm they had been forecasting began.  It absolutely poured!  It was like someone turned a bucket upside down on us.  I pulled out an umbrella but with the wind it proved futile.  So we gave up and just surrendered to the rain.  Actually I don't mind it.  I used to run around outside when it was raining all the time.   I love the feel of the rain on my face.  It is very cathartic.  I'd forgotten how much fun that can be.

I woke up the next day and had a multitude of dishes to do cause I'd left them undone for four days.  It's just one of those chores I don't particularly relish.  By the time I finished that I had to get dressed and head out for my dress fitting.  Karen's wedding is coming up in November and I didn't want to put off getting the dress fitted any longer.

Once I got home Ann came over and we had a couple glasses of wine and chatted before heading out to see Second City.  We opted for the dinner theatre package they offered which included dinner at Wayne Gretsky's restaurant and the Second City mainstage show.  The food was good. The price included an appetizer, main course and dessert.

The current Second City mainstage show is called Bird Flu over the Cuckoo's Nest.  It was great!  We laughed so hard. The cast is excellent.  After the show ended the cast did an improv set in which they took two audience suggestions and created a series of skits upon them.  That was pretty funny too. It also showcased their improvisational talent. It was a great night.

After the show, Ann caught a cab to go back to her daughter's condo.  I opted to take the subway home.  By this point it was 1am and all the bars were getting out.   It crossed my mind that the subway might stop running shortly so I ended up running to the subway cause I didn't want to get stranded in downtown Toronto by myself.  I think I managed to catch the last bus once reaching my subway stop. Close call.

Sunday was a really productive day. I somehow managed to haul myself out of bed at 9:30am and I headed over to Yorkdale to get Karen's shower gift.  I'm so excited about going home for the week-end.  It should be a fun short visit.

I picked up groceries on my way home and then started making potato soup so I would have something for lunch this week. I got sick of eating sandwiches.  I made scones to go with the soup and chocolate chip cookies for dessert.  After I finished my cooking marathon I watched Pretty in Pink.  I had never seen it before.  It was a cute VERY 80s movie.

Tonight I head to the Toronto Film Festival to see Away From Her which was a movie written and directed by Sarah Polley and adapted from a short story by Alice Munroe.  I'm looking forward to it.
